Things to Keep in Mind When Picking Dental Fillings

One of the first thing to consider is the location of the filling.  As a restorative dentist, we recommend that if you are getting dental fillings in your front teeth, you select tooth-colored ones that will blend in.  If you are having fillings placed in your back molars, going with an option like silver is a possibility since that area is harder to see when you smile.

Amalgam.  This has been a standard solution that dentists throughout the world still use when restoring damaged teeth and fixing cavities.  Amalgam is a metal composite that is incredibly durable.  As such, it is often used on back molars.  The challenge with amalgam is that it stands out when you speak or smile.  If you are looking for a discreet solution, this is not it. The benefit of amalgam is that it is affordable and durable.

Silver.  If you would like your dental fillings to be made of a pure metal, silver is a good solution.  While more expensive than amalgam, there is no mercury and some Pleasanton patients appreciate that.

Gold.  For years, gold has been the best option for dental fillings when patients were seeking a more discreet solution.  Gold can blend far better than silver or amalgam and is durable.  The challenge is the cost.  Naturally, gold is significantly more expensive.

Ceramic resin.  Tooth-colored dental fillings are becoming the standard in dentistry. When our 94566 patients visit our office to speak with a restorative dentist, they regularly ask for tooth-colored fillings for several reasons.  First, they blend in with the surrounding tooth structure.  This makes it possible to have a cavity filled or small chip restored and no one knows that there was ever any issue with the tooth.  Unlike other metal fillings, ceramic resin can blend so completely that even you will have a hard time remembering which tooth was ever damaged.

At Pleasanton Valley Dental, we have found that most of our patients prefer tooth-colored dental fillings but we are happy to provide you with the type of filling that you prefer.
